What Is Meant By Successful Settlement?
In order to find out and understand if the British settlement of New Zealand was more successful than the British settlement of New South Wales in Australia, we need to understand what the term 'successful settlement' means.
Settlement:
A settlement is where a small population of people has set up an area where they live, work and socialise. When foreigners settle a country or a place, it is usually defined as the establishment or colonisation of a new region. From previous research, we already know that the British arrived to Australia in 1788, hoping to settle the land and make friends with the Indigenous Australians. As we've seen, the British, lead by Governor Arthur Phillips, did manage to do so.
Successful Settlement:
The concept of successful settlement has the same idea as a settlement. A successful settlement is where a population of people has set up a harmonic area where they live, work, socialise and allow everyting to grow. Foreigners colonise new regions, but they do it in a more cilivised and humane way. They would perhaps blend in with the already excisting culture and follow their customs and beliefs. However, the British settlement of Australia demonstrates a clear example of what is neither peaceful nor a successful settlement, because of a number of factors such as communication problems, no-pre knowledge of the tribes, communication problems and simply because the British settled with too many tribes.
